urban roots & a not so normal life

Growing up in the Dearborn Homes projects on Chicago’s South Side, marrying a high-school sweetheart, making it to the NFL, learning to grow food & raise chickens and grooming people to live a mindful life must be an Herban Myth.

After a long career in the NFL, battling injuries and increased pain Toyia set out to help recover & heal through better food choices and Alternative Medicine. Since 2012 she has continued to expand her knowledge on medicinal herbs and indigenous medicine from different countries around the world.

Since 2016 Toyia’s husband, Joe Mays, has used a multitude of healing modalities and natural medicine to help heal the residuals of a tough football career. Though the natural healing process was not enough to reverse the damage, he has used it to create a sense of normalcy to get him through daily activities.

At The Laya Center, Toyia has created a modern healing oasis for everyday people to become educated on Natural Medicine, Holistic Wellness, and Spiritual Healing. The new addition of a Tea Bar has elevated the ability to incorporate medicinal herbs into everyday routines.
